Join the Team (SMAT)

Thank you for your interest in the Eastern Healthcare Preparedness Coalition (EHPC) State Medical Assistance Team (SMAT). Please read the following information carefully as there are several requirements identified that must be completed to receive credit for the training and attain full membership status.

Register On NC Terms: 

TERMS is a web-based application that you must complete to be a member of SMAT or MRC. This takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. Once on the landing page you will do the following: Existing TERMS User – you can enter your responder information into the “Home / My Account / Response Profile. New Users – Click on “Create Account Now”, under the Have an Account Question. You will need all of your certifications, license, and immunization record. This allows for verification of all information prior to a deployment. You must also complete the paper application so that we can maintain a hard copy of your file for backup. This hard copy also requires that your manager sign off on it so that they are aware of your intentions to participate in the SMAT program.

Training Dates and Location:

SMAT and MRC Team Members will be required to take the SMAT Initial Training Course. Training Dates and Locations will be posted in NC TERMS or on our website under SMAT Events/Training. Prerequisite Requirements:

EHPC SMAT II requires that you complete four additional on-line courses provided by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) Independent Study Program. The courses you need to complete are:

To access these courses go to the FEMA website; http://training.fema.gov/IS/NIMS.asp  or click on the courses listed above. Upon completion of the on-line exam, FEMA will email you a course completion notice followed by a printed certificate that you will receive in the mail several weeks later.  Print a copy of the email notification and save it for your file. This will not be due on the first class, but will be due at a later time.

Additional Recommended Courses:

  • ICS 300
  • ICS 400

These courses are offered as in person classes. Training Dates and Locations will be posted in NC TERMS or on our website under SMAT Events/Training. Please check the Events/Training Calendar periodically to stay up to date on any new training’s.

Documentation:

  • On the first day of class we will need the following documentation from you:

    • Copy of your professional license (RN, MD, RPh, EMT, etc.)
    • Copies of any certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, etc)
    • Signed Confidentiality Agreement (provided in class)
    • EHPC SMAT II Data Sheet (provided in class)
    • Use this form to track your progress.

As these documents will become part of your permanent personnel file, please provide copies, not originals. 

Team Training:

EHPC will conduct or provide bimonthly training in accordance with NCOEMS requirements. Training is generally scheduled as and 8 hour block or as deemed appropriate. Training will cover a variety of subjects and will give team members the opportunity to obtain some extra training on our equipment. Training Dates and Locations will be posted in NC TERMS or on our website under SMAT Events/Training. Please check the Events/Training Calendar periodically to stay up to date on any new training’s.

Trainees will be asked to dress appropriately for the training. Shoes are to be closed toe and heel. Please be reminded this will be on hands training and depending on the weather there may be a chance of getting wet.
